Each muscle fiber has a single motor end plate, although motor neuron axons have many branches connecting the motor neuron to various muscle fibers. When an impulse is transmitted, all con-nected muscle fibers contract at the same time. A motor unit is a functional structure consisting of a motor neuron and the muscle fibers it innervates (FIGURE 9-8).
