Supply and dispensing of medicines
The supply of
medicines to staff in CHS has usually been provided by an acute or mental
health hospital/trust under a contract or SLA. This route is also used for
dispensed medicines for patients in community hospitals. In some areas these
services are now obtained from a local community pharmacy under a contract or
SLA. Any services obtained must meet required standards and ensure
cost-effective use of pharmaceuticals. Contracts, SLAs and so on should be
monitored by the lead CHS pharmacist. There should be written policies that
comply with the safe and secure handling of medicines. Procedures for the
ordering, supply and safe delivery of pharmaceuticals to community premises
must be in place. Stock lists and levels need to be agreed between the health
professionals and the pharmacy team. They must be available, as a basis for
ordering and stock control in every clinic and community site, and safe and
secure storage must be provided. There may be a trend to seek independent
providers for supply services in a similar way to the provision to mental
health trusts and for outpatient dispensing.
