Enzymes: L-Asparaginase
It is an
enzyme isolated from Escherichia coli and
Erwinia carotovora. The enzyme has a
molecular mass of 130,000. It consists of four equivalent subunits. It breaks
down asparagin to aspartic acid and ammonia. It is active against tumour cells
having lost the capacity to synthesize asparagines.
Properties and uses: It is used to treat childhood acute lymphocytic
leukaemia in combination with vincristine and prednisone.
