INTRODUCTION
Disinfectants, antiseptics and preservatives
are chemical agents that have the ability to destroy or inhibit the growth of
microorganisms. They play a major role in medical and health care but also have

coatings, plastics, pharmaceutical, food and beverage manufacture, textiles,
the catering industry and consumer products. The term biocide is increasingly used to describe this
group of chemical agents and this term is used widely throughout European Union
(EU) directives.
