ECHINOCANDINS—CASPOFUNGIN, ANIDULAFUNGIN AND MICAFUNGIN
These members of the echinocandin group of antifungal agents have been
developed for treatment of serious fungal infections. They interfere with the
synthesis of the β-1,3-d-glucan polymer in the fungal cell wall. Without the
glucan polymer, the integrity of the fungal cell wall is compromised, yeast
cells lose their rigidity and become like protoplasts; the effect is especially
pronounced in Candida and Aspergillus species.
